III International Scientific Conference "Globalization Challenges in Economics and Business"

The 3rd International Conference "Globalization Challenges in Economics and Business" dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Tbilisi State University was held on October 26-27, 2018 at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. The conference was attended by scientists both from Georgia and eight countries: France, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan.

On October 26, the plenary session was opened at the first building of the university by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Professor Giorgi Gaganidze, Doctor of Law and the head of the TSU Administration Nunu Ovosiankova,  Chairman of the Committee of the Sectoral Economics and Economic Policy of the Georgia Parliament Roman Kakulia, , Professor,the chair of the Theoretical Economics Department, TSU Faculty of Economics and Business,  Elguja Mekvabishvili. Thay all made welcome speeches.

The speakers of the plenary session noted, that the international conferences, dedicated to globalization problems, were established as a good tradition at the Faculty of Economics and Business, where the Georgian and foreign scientists familiarize each other their opinions. It is also a welcome fact that the number of foreign participants are growing annually. The present conference is exceptional, as it was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University’s establishment.

Since the 1990s, globalization has become a major global development trend that has an active impact on all aspects of modern societies. Globalization is a complex phenomenon and in its study, in the opinion of the speakers, the role of economic and business sciences is essential, as the basis for everything is the globalization of the economy.

The speakers discussed the special importance that globalization has for the Georgian economy. It was noted that it is necessary for the government to develop the economic policy that will minimize the negative consequences of globalization and will encourage the use of its positive sides.

The speakers wished successful work to the conference participants and expressed hope that guests will be able to enjoy free time and take pleasure in sightseeing of Tbilisi and Mtskheta within the framework of the conference.

The speeches were delivered at the plenary session by:

TSU professor, academician Vladimir Papava on "The Economic Model of Georgia:" Consumer Paradox "and" Tourist Trap." According to the speaker, Georgia's modern economic model is based on the stimulation of consumption rather than production. In 2017, imports exceeded exports 3.8 times, while the share of imported goods was 80% in the consumer and food basket. The priority for the Government of Georgia, according to Vladimir Papava, should become on knowledge-based economics and emphasizes the importance of the development of real economy through its industrialization.

 Veronica Flamber, Professor of the French Catholic University of Lille, shifted focus to the impact of globalization in the EU countries, especially in France. It was noted that this process has a number of contradictions that are manifested in both economic and political spheres, and a cautious and balanced approach to globalization is essential.

 Vadim Getman Kiev National Economic University's Associate Professor Tatiana Soboleva's report was devoted to the problem of intellectual property management in the conditions of global technological upheavals. It was noted that in recent decades the principal new directions of development of a number of fields and sciences were formed, which, in turn, substantially change the competitiveness parameters, introduce innovations in the foreground. At present, special importance is given to the use of exponential technologies in different areas of public life.

Jacek Stroiny, Professor of Rzeszów University of Technology, Poland, presented an interesting report to the audience, who spoke about modern public management issues in local self-governments. On the example of Polish experience, the speaker paid attention to those challenges which exist in modern conditions in terms of selecting optimal ratio of centralized management and decentralization.

Ioseb Khelashvili, Professor of TSU, noted in his report "Social and Economic Challenges for Sustainable Development of Tourism" that the development of tourism sector is of utmost importance for the Georgian economy and has a multiplier effect. He emphasized the importance of using the Kay model of teaching. He emphasized the necessity of sustainable development of tourism and the factors contributing to it.

The work of the conference resumed in the sections after the break. There were 13 sections: Econometrics - Chair Prof. Iuri Ananiashvili. Two reports were delivered – I. Ananiashvili and M. 53 scientific reports were delivered at sections. An interesting discussion was held about some issues.

The results of the conference were summarized by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Prof. Giorgi Gaganidze. Once again he stressed the importance of the main topic of the conference, a complex character and talked about the necessity of its joint research. The Dean expressed hope that the Faculty will also be able to successfully prepare for the 4th International Conference and conduct at a high level.

It is welcome that the conference participants were given the collection of reports of the 3rd International Scientific Conference, which is a solid scientific work in terms of content and volume (542 pp).

The conduction of the 3rd International Conference - "Globalization Challenges in Economics and Business" - was an important event in the life of the Faculty of Economics and Business, with which the Faculty made its own contribution to celebrating the 100th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University.
